Curated Genera runtime screenshots

This directory contains thirty-five narrowly selected screen captures used to document visible application behavior in the museum's Genera 8.5 world, plus ten short runtime animations assembled from ordered captures within one coherent session. Thirty-three stills are exact byte-for-byte copies of captures produced by the Xvfb computer-use harness. The two Hardcopy images are documented crops of raw captures that remove an unrelated Listener and exploratory debugger state. The licensed world, raw sessions, JSON sidecars, logs, and all other captures remain untracked.

Rights basis and scope

These thirty-five images were reviewed on 2026-07-18, 2026-07-19, and 2026-07-26 for their specific uses in the linked museum articles and specifications. They reproduce sparse, predominantly functional application screens in direct support of nonprofit historical criticism, comment, scholarship, and runtime verification. The repository-wide screenshot publication rights review records the capture-specific analysis and publication policy. The project relies on the case-specific fair-use analysis in 17 U.S.C. section 107: the documentary purpose is different from operating the software, the visible material is largely functional, only the states needed to substantiate the discussion are shown, and the images cannot substitute for Genera, its source, its documentation, or a software license. The Copyright Office's Compendium section 721.10 also distinguishes copyrightable screen expression from purely functional elements, layouts, blank forms, and de minimis menu screens.

This is a preservation-project assessment, not legal advice, a declaration that the screens are in the public domain, or permission to publish arbitrary Genera output. It does not cover a bulk screenshot gallery, full Help or manual text, source listings, fonts, pictures, worlds, or any other licensed material.

The archive's og2/NOTICE.TEXT;119 (5,387 bytes; SHA-256 79c3d4053e3c6e1a5fe4f4640a2344c657513dfc82649b9393bf63c97780d256) asserts proprietary rights and refers to a separate written license agreement; that agreement is not present in the inspected archive. The captures are therefore not represented as vendor-authorized redistribution. They are included only under the limited fair-use rationale above. Genera and Symbolics names and marks belong to their respective owners, and this project is not affiliated with or endorsed by Symbolics.

Project-license exclusion: no license covering the repository's original code or prose is extended to these third-party screen displays. Downstream users receive no additional permission from this project beyond rights they may independently have under applicable law.

Approved specification uses

  • The linear Genera working-session tour, orientation, and application atlas may use the reviewed stills and ten animations cataloged below. These uses are limited to teaching the exact visible Listener, System Menu, Zmacs, Help, buffer-presentation, character-style, Document Examiner, Presentation Inspector, Frame-Up, Debugger, Accepting Values, compiler, communications, and administration states beside substantive release-bounded explanation. Each GIF retains actual ordered action-boundary states from one Genera 8.5 interaction. Presentation Inspector and Frame-Up remain still images because their earlier endpoint alternations did not record a coherent interaction.

For these animations specifically, the purpose is nonprofit instruction and criticism of verified gestures, activity selections, and context changes; the displayed material is predominantly functional; only action-boundary frames needed to make each interaction legible are retained; and the inert loops cannot select an activity, operate Genera, or substitute for the world, source, documentation, fonts, or a license. Those four factors support the same limited fair-use conclusion as the source stills. scripts/build-tour-animations.sh verifies the reviewed GIF digests and frame counts without rebuilding them from unrelated tracked stills.

  • zmacs-character-style-prompt.png is embedded only in Inks, faces, and character styles in Symbolics Genera. Its use is limited to the visible Zmacs buffer, test text, mode line, and live Change style of character to [default NIL.NIL.NIL]: prompt reviewed on 2026-07-26. It does not establish every completion, menu, device-font mapping, successful mutation, persistence path, source-to-world identity, exact font identity, or general Genera appearance.

  • dynamic-lisp-listener-multiple-values.png is also embedded in the Lisp Listeners and editable input reimplementation specification. Its use there is limited to the Dynamic Lisp Listener's visible interactor, scrolling, prompt, cursor, who-line, and value-line ordering reviewed on 2026-07-19; the startup notice remains incidental context and the image is not a generic Genera illustration.

  • debugger-dynamic-choices.png is also embedded in Ragged window borders in Symbolics Genera. Its additional use is limited to the visible top ragged edge, straight side edges, left and bottom scroll margins, and bottom label surrounding the synthetic Debugger/Listener state reviewed on 2026-07-18 and re-reviewed on 2026-07-26. The image does not establish an active side-ragged state, the loaded source identity, every viewport transition, or general Genera appearance.

  • system-menu.png is also embedded in the program selection, activities, and window management reimplementation specification. Its use there is limited to the live Genera 8.5 popup's visible three-column organization, labels, highlighted Refresh item, pointer documentation, border, drop shadow, and surrounding screen relationship reviewed on 2026-07-19. It does not prove target-window, registry, callback, destructive-operation, or saved-layout state; the startup notice remains incidental context, and the image is not a generic Genera illustration.

  • system-menu.png is also embedded in the CADR and Genera interface style guide. Its use there is limited to criticism and implementation guidance about the visible title, columns, type hierarchy, current-item outline, border, hard lower-right shadow, framed Listener, scrollbar, label, and bottom status relationship reviewed on 2026-07-26. It is not a decorative design asset and does not establish hidden menu behavior, exact unmeasured dimensions, or general Genera appearance.

  • accepting-values-gc-options.png is also embedded in the CADR and Genera interface style guide. Its use there is limited to criticism and implementation guidance about the visible textual grouping, indentation, inline alternatives, bold current choices, italic constraints, printed action presentations, and bottom pointer documentation reviewed on 2026-07-26. Its volatile values are not treated as release defaults or configuration advice, and it is not a decorative form template.

  • screen-editor-menu.png and frame-up-split-layout.png are also embedded in the Screen Editor and Frame-Up layout design reimplementation specification. Their use there is limited respectively to the visible Genera 8.5 operation menu and the researcher-created two-display-pane Frame-Up model, command transcript, and four-region application layout reviewed on 2026-07-19. They do not establish hidden handler contents, mutation, Undo, generated code, Preview, or general pixel identity; startup/debugger text remains incidental context.

  • emergency-break-arithmetic-evaluation.png is also embedded in the Emergency Break and degraded interaction paths reimplementation specification. Its use there is limited to the Genera 8.5 cold-load client's sparse functional display, the explicit Emergency Break/breakpoint identity, the researcher-entered (+ 40 2) form and 42 result, and the independent 1024-by-768 client geometry reviewed on 2026-07-19. It does not establish every entry gesture, editor key, nested-debugger state, recovery branch, or screen-save transition, and it is not a generic Genera illustration.

  • zmacs-editor-menu.png, zmacs-help-dispatcher.png, and zmacs-two-window-layout.png are also embedded in the EINE, ZWEI, and Zmacs editor-family reimplementation specification. Their use there is limited to the visible fifteen-action Editor menu, one functional Help-dispatcher state, and two-pane relationship reviewed on 2026-07-19. They do not establish hidden comtabs or translator ownership, command effects, source-to-world identity, exact fonts, timing, or general Genera pixel identity; startup text is incidental context.

  • zmacs-help-dispatcher.png and document-examiner-initial.png are separately approved for the D07 Help, self-documentation, and Document Examiner reimplementation specification. Their use there is limited to the one-line Genera Zmacs dispatcher and the 1200-by-900 Standard Document Examiner arrangement, populated Current Candidates, empty Bookmarks, Commands interactor, and eight menu-item positions reviewed on 2026-07-19. They do not establish physical F12 identity, leaf/gesture effects, boxed menu cells, the 950-pixel threshold, Small layout, pop-up Help, optional commands, licensed documentation content, or general Genera appearance.

  • zmacs-edit-buffers-marked-delete.png is approved for the directory, difference, and buffer editors reimplementation specification. Its use is limited to the true Genera 8.5 Edit Buffers heading, action column, buffer row, read-only mode line, and visible result of lowercase d reviewed on 2026-07-19. It does not prove command dispatch beyond the recorded action, deletion execution, Abort semantics, List Buffers presentation behavior, Dired behavior, or source-to-world identity.

  • zmail-reader-empty.png and zmacs-text-mail-template.png are approved for the D08 ZMail and mail composition reimplementation specification. The first use is limited to the visible empty summary/message arrangement, 20-cell main menu, and three short operational hints after local login. The second is limited to the blank To/Subject template, body separator, and Text Mail mode line that distinguish Zmacs composition from the reader; the residual Zmail/dither region at right is incidental and does not specify a complete application-frame geometry. Neither image establishes internal pane identity, pointer or presentation dispatch, collection contents, draft ownership, command effects, service configuration, background/load ordering, save or transport success, source-to-world identity, exact fonts, or general Genera pixel identity.

  • converse-empty.png and notifications-synthetic-record.png are approved for the D09 Converse, direct messages, and Notifications reimplementation specification and historical evidence dossier. Their use is limited to the blank Converse entry form and structural layout, and the separate Notifications viewer containing one researcher-authored retained record, reviewed on 2026-07-19. They do not establish message delivery, reply or peer behavior, command dispatch beyond the action log, notification ordering or timing, source-to-world identity, exact fonts, or general Genera pixel identity.

  • terminal-disconnected.png is approved for the D10 network terminal applications reimplementation specification and historical dossier, and normative System 452.1 Terminal companion. Its use is limited to the live Connect: (the name of a host) prompt, initial Terminal 1 label, blank terminal surface, left scrollbar, who-line and relative geometry reviewed on 2026-07-19. It does not establish completion choices, connection, negotiation, command dispatch, scrollback, simulators, source-to-world identity, exact fonts, or general Genera pixel identity.

The ordered interaction selected Zmacs, inserted the researcher-authored line Plain text, then styled text, recorded one semantic key probe that Zmacs reported as undefined, and then dispatched Control plus the X mod2 path and J. The selected capture is the resulting style prompt. This proves that visible prompt in this world; it does not prove that the host chord is a portable physical-keyboard recipe or that later exploratory input changed a style successfully.

The ordered input was deliberately explicit. Select E entered Zmacs. The harness then recorded keydown Control_L, keydown x, keyup x, keyup Control_L, followed by keydown Control_L, keydown Shift_L, keydown b, keyup b, keyup Shift_L, and keyup Control_L. The resulting screen identified Zmacs (Edit Buffers) *Edit-Buffers-1* (RO), which distinguishes this true Control-X Control-Shift-B application from the earlier List Buffers capture. Lowercase d then put D in the row's action column. A later dispatch of the harness's abort alias did not leave this mode and therefore supports no claim about Edit Buffers' Abort command; that later frame remains local.

The selected image is the one successful layout result, not the exploratory sequence.

The ordered interaction opened Set GC Options, moved through its live Accepting Values form, and deliberately changed no option. A read-only CLIM-status expression was mistakenly entered while a Boolean field still owned input; the type checker rejected it, and the input was removed before the selected capture. The pointer then rested on the printed Abort presentation, causing the bottom documentation line to identify its left- and right-button action. A left click aborted the form and returned to the Listener. Two subsequent read-only queries established that this fresh world had neither a registered system name containing CLIM nor a CLIM package or :CLIM feature. Those Listener screens remain ignored because they add no distinctive CLIM interface evidence. Generation 1 stopped before launch because another VLM was still active; generation 2 failed before a guest started because its experimental launcher named a nonexistent sandbox shell. Neither preflight produced guest input.

The ordered interaction queried the two default-printer variables, enumerated the six live hardcopy formats, and queried the loaded versions of Hardcopy, Press, GPrint, Print, and PostScript. An exploratory attempt to treat the screen-option template helpers as conses entered the Debugger and was aborted. The session then opened the Hardcopy File form and the numeric-argument Screen hardcopy form and aborted each through its printed Abort presentation. It never chose Done, captured a requested screen, loaded another system, opened an output file, contacted a printer, or submitted a request. The selected crops retain only the two forms; the raw frames, Listener transcript, and debugger remain ignored.

The ordered interaction entered one researcher-authored, read-only expression that reported server policy, the registry count, and selected registered/enabled pairs; captured the result; and initiated shutdown. It enabled no service, contacted no peer, opened no output file, and displayed no installed Help. A generation-1 preflight failed before the VLM ran because it was invoked outside the required Guix wrapper; it produced no guest input and is not runtime evidence.

The ordered interaction targeted the main client; opened the System Menu with the Shift/right-button gesture while retaining the complete exploratory attempts in the action log; highlighted and selected Emergency Break; targeted the separately identified cold-load client; typed the researcher-authored form (+ 40 2); sent its End activation as host KP_End; captured the resulting 42; sent host F5 to the cold-load client for the mapped Resume gesture; verified the main Listener was restored in a separate ignored capture; and initiated shutdown. Every recorded input intent has a linked successful XTEST-dispatch outcome. The screenshot proves the displayed breakpoint state and evaluation; source and the ordered record, rather than the still alone, ground entry and return semantics.

Publication boundary The exact PNG alone passed the image- and D10-use-specific fair-use review. Licensed world, raw captures, Help screen, sidecar, action log and session remain ignored; no repository-wide license extends to the displayed third-party screen.

The ordered interaction completed the local non-network login, invoked Select T, captured the untouched Terminal frame, and later pressed Network-Help solely to verify the live command surface. The Help frame contains licensed prose and remains ignored. The capture proves the prompt, initial label, blank surface, scrollbar, who-line and geometry only. The isolated namespace exposed no peer or external route.

Each screenshot sidecar captured the prefix of the action log that existed when the PNG was installed. Counts below include both the recorded intent and its linked outcome, so six records represent three attempted actions. The sidecar's prefix hash makes preceding exploratory input visible rather than silently reducing provenance to the final keystroke.

All ten files use a 1200-by-900 logical canvas and infinite looping. They retain ordered action-boundary captures rather than claiming real-time timing. ImageMagick's lossless changed-region optimization may store later frames as smaller rectangles while preserving that logical canvas.

Tour animation session provenance

Item Recorded value
Session tour-record-genera-20260726, generation 1; Genera 8.5
Ordered evidence 126 harness action records; action-log SHA-256 118ff537c8918e402590ab8bba770d06354af064d6b6d1125ac6c6fbf478fbf7
Animation boundary Only captures 0002–0033 named above are published; later exploratory GC-form exit attempts are excluded
World boundary Licensed base and private VLOD identities, debugger, VLM, preloads, responder, configuration, Bubblewrap namespaces, selected X window, toolchain, and every dispatched input remain in the ignored run record
Capture method Native 1200-by-900 harness screenshots installed atomically after each recorded input outcome; ordered action-boundary animation, not independent real-time video
Shutdown Confirmation accepted and cleanup began, then the known current-VLM Cold Load channel mutex stall required bounded force; not orderly
Persistence Private world unchanged; the harness did not invoke Save World and created no host checkpoint

The PNG digest covers the exact tracked file bytes. The pixel digest covers the SHA-256 of the decoded image normalized by ImageMagick to alpha-off, 8-bit RGB bytes. Except for the two explicitly identified Hardcopy crops, no image was cropped, resized, recolored, annotated, or re-encoded while being curated. The Hardcopy crops were made with ImageMagick 7.1.2-27: raw 0006-hardcopy-file-form.png used 625x264+0+0, and raw 0008-screen-hardcopy-form.png used 1134x157+0+167; both used +repage and no other transform.

Shutdown and persistence results

Zmacs session

The shutdown prompt was observed, yes was sent and accepted, and cleanup progress was observed. The VLM then encountered the reproduced Cold Load channel mutex stall and required bounded host termination. The final record is therefore forced-stopped, with forced_stop=true, forced_after_confirmed_shutdown_stall=true, state_may_be_incomplete=true, and orderly_vlm_host_shutdown=false.

The base and private world hashes remained identical. The harness did not invoke Genera's Save World and created no host-process checkpoint. Whether an independent in-guest save or checkpoint occurred remains unknown; no persistence claim is inferred from the screenshots.

Character-style prompt session

The shutdown prompt was observed, yes was sent and accepted, and cleanup progress was visible before the known Cold Load channel mutex stall required bounded host termination. The final record sets forced_stop=true, forced_after_confirmed_shutdown_stall=true, state_may_be_incomplete=true, and orderly_vlm_host_shutdown=false.

The private world remained byte-identical to the base world. The harness invoked neither Save World nor a process checkpoint; save_world_performed and guest_checkpoint_created remain unknown, the unsaved editor state was discarded, and no session process remained.

Edit Buffers session

The stop path observed the VLM prompt, sent confirmation, and observed cleanup progress, but did not record confirmation acceptance before the supervisor timeout. The bounded fallback then stopped the remaining processes. The final record is therefore forced-stopped, with forced_stop=true, forced_after_confirmed_shutdown_stall=false, state_may_be_incomplete=true, and orderly_vlm_host_shutdown=false. It must not be described as the separately confirmed Cold Load mutex stall seen in other runs.

The private and base worlds remained byte-identical, and the private world did not change during the run. The harness invoked neither Save World nor a host-process checkpoint; save_world_performed and guest_checkpoint_created remain unknown. No marked buffer action was executed before shutdown, and no session process remained.

Core applications session

This session reached the same bounded shutdown condition after the shutdown prompt was observed, yes was accepted, and cleanup progress appeared. The known cold-load channel mutex stall then required host termination. Its final record says forced_stop=true, forced_after_confirmed_shutdown_stall=true, state_may_be_incomplete=true, and orderly_vlm_host_shutdown=false. The private world remained byte-identical to the base, no Save World or host-process checkpoint was requested, and no session process remained after cleanup.

Frame-Up session

After the documented split, Done returned Frame-Up to the preceding Dynamic Lisp Listener. The harness then reached the same confirmed shutdown and cleanup stall as the other Genera sessions and performed bounded host termination. The final record says forced_stop=true, forced_after_confirmed_shutdown_stall=true, state_may_be_incomplete=true, and orderly_vlm_host_shutdown=false. The unsaved Frame-Up model was discarded, the private and base world hashes remained identical, no Save World or process checkpoint was requested, and no session process remained.

Debugger, Document Examiner, Flavor Examiner, and trace sessions

Each of the four later sessions reached the same known Cold Load channel mutex stall after the shutdown prompt was observed, yes was accepted, and cleanup progress was visible. Bounded host termination followed. Their final records therefore set forced_stop=true, forced_after_confirmed_shutdown_stall=true, state_may_be_incomplete=true, and orderly_vlm_host_shutdown=false.

In every case the private world remained byte-identical to the base world, the harness requested neither Save World nor a process checkpoint, and cleanup left no session process running. This establishes isolation of the observation; it does not turn the forced stop into an orderly guest shutdown.

Zmail and Presentation Inspector sessions

Both sessions reached the same known Cold Load channel mutex stall after the shutdown prompt was observed, yes was accepted, and cleanup progress was visible. Bounded host termination followed. Their final records set forced_stop=true, forced_after_confirmed_shutdown_stall=true, state_may_be_incomplete=true, and orderly_vlm_host_shutdown=false.

For both runs the private world remained byte-identical to the base world, the harness invoked neither Save World nor a process checkpoint, unsaved Lisp state was discarded, and no session process remained. The unchanged world files establish the isolation result; they do not imply that the bounded forced stop was an orderly guest shutdown.

Converse and Notifications session

The shutdown prompt was observed, yes was accepted, and cleanup progress was visible before the known Cold Load channel mutex stall required bounded host termination. The final record sets forced_stop=true, forced_after_confirmed_shutdown_stall=true, state_may_be_incomplete=true, and orderly_vlm_host_shutdown=false.

The private world remained byte-identical to the base world. The harness invoked neither Save World nor a process checkpoint, the researcher-created notification and option change were discarded with unsaved Lisp state, and no session process remained.

Namespace Editor session

The shutdown prompt was observed, yes was accepted, and cleanup progress was visible before the known Cold Load channel mutex stall required bounded host termination. The final record sets forced_stop=true, forced_after_confirmed_shutdown_stall=true, state_may_be_incomplete=true, and orderly_vlm_host_shutdown=false.

The private world remained byte-identical to the base world. The harness invoked neither Save World nor a process checkpoint, no namespace mutation was attempted, and no session process remained. This establishes observation isolation, not an orderly VLM host exit.

Runtime and compiler session

This session reached the same confirmed shutdown and cleanup stall after the prompt was observed and confirmation accepted. Its final record sets forced_stop=true, forced_after_confirmed_shutdown_stall=true, state_may_be_incomplete=true, and orderly_vlm_host_shutdown=false; bounded host termination left no VLM or Xvfb process. The base and private worlds remained byte-identical, the harness invoked no Save World or process checkpoint, and the synthetic function and all other unsaved Lisp state were discarded.

Accepting Values and CLIM-presence session

This session reached the same confirmed shutdown and cleanup stall after the prompt was observed and confirmation accepted. Its final record sets forced_stop=true, forced_after_confirmed_shutdown_stall=true, state_may_be_incomplete=true, and orderly_vlm_host_shutdown=false; bounded host termination left no VLM or Xvfb process. The private world never diverged from the base-world hash, the harness invoked no Save World or process checkpoint, and all unsaved interaction state was discarded. The unchanged world establishes observation isolation; it does not make the bounded forced stop an orderly guest shutdown.

Hardcopy forms session

The shutdown prompt was observed, yes was accepted, and cleanup progress was visible before the known Cold Load channel mutex stall required bounded host termination. The final record sets forced_stop=true, forced_after_confirmed_shutdown_stall=true, state_may_be_incomplete=true, and orderly_vlm_host_shutdown=false; no session process remained afterward.

The private world remained byte-identical to the base world. The harness invoked neither Save World nor a process checkpoint, both forms were explicitly aborted, no print request was submitted, and all unsaved interaction state was discarded.

Network-service registry session

The shutdown prompt was observed, confirmation was sent and accepted, and cleanup progress was visible before the known stall required bounded host termination. The record sets forced_stop=true, forced_after_confirmed_shutdown_stall=true, state_may_be_incomplete=true, and unsaved_lisp_state_discarded=true. The private world remained byte-identical to the base world, and the harness invoked neither Save World nor a checkpoint. The unchanged world establishes observation isolation, not an orderly VLM exit.

Emergency Break publication session

The shutdown prompt was observed, yes was sent and accepted, and cleanup progress was visible before the reproduced Cold Load channel mutex stall required bounded host termination. The final record sets forced_stop=true, forced_after_confirmed_shutdown_stall=true, state_may_be_incomplete=true, orderly_vlm_host_shutdown=false, vlm_forced_stop=true, and xvfb_returncode=0; the launcher return code is 137. This was not an orderly VLM host shutdown.

The private world stayed byte-identical to the base world for the entire run. The harness did not invoke Save World or create a host-process checkpoint; save_world_performed and guest_checkpoint_created remain unknown, and the final record marks the unsaved Lisp state discarded. These facts establish the bounded publication observation and lack of world-file mutation, not a general persistence claim.

D10 Terminal session

The shutdown prompt was observed, yes was sent and accepted, and cleanup progress was observed before the reproduced Cold Load channel mutex stall required bounded host termination. The final record sets forced_stop=true, forced_after_confirmed_shutdown_stall=true, state_may_be_incomplete=true, orderly_vlm_host_shutdown=false, and unsaved_lisp_state_discarded=true; the launcher return code is 137. This was not an orderly VLM host shutdown.

The private world remained byte-identical to the base world. The harness did not invoke Save World or create a host-process checkpoint. save_world_performed and guest_checkpoint_created remain unknown except for those negative harness facts. The selected screenshot precedes the later raw Help probe and establishes only the initial disconnected state.
