Curated MIT CADR runtime screenshots

This directory contains twenty-three reviewed runtime captures selected from fourteen provenance-bearing System 303 sessions—twenty-two exact full framebuffers and one documented crop that retains a complete application window—plus ten runtime animations captured from coherent interactions. They are runtime observations, not manual illustrations and not claims about every CADR, application, or debugger release.

Rights status

These twenty-three PNGs are included for the museum's criticism, comment, scholarship, and research under the fair-use limitation in 17 U.S.C. § 107. This is an asset- and use-specific conclusion, not a statement that every screenshot of every computer system is automatically free to publish.

The repository-wide selection criteria and reassessment process are documented in the screenshot publication rights review.

The Copyright Office explains that copyrightable screen displays generated by a program may be covered with the program in Circular 61. A screenshot therefore is not automatically outside copyright merely because a researcher captured it. The publication basis here is the limited documentary use assessed below.

The present use is narrowly documentary: each image appears beside analysis of the exact application or recovery state it proves; the set contains twenty-three low-resolution still frames from a much larger interactive system; the images cannot substitute for the software, load band, source, fonts, or manuals; and no market for licensing these System 303 observations was identified. The Ninth Circuit held the use of a handful of actual software screenshots fair in Sony Computer Entertainment America v. Bleem, 214 F.3d 1022, and the Second Circuit treated images used as historical artifacts in explanatory context as fair in Bill Graham Archives v. Dorling Kindersley, 448 F.3d 605. Fair use remains a case-specific U.S. doctrine.

The displayed window, ZWEI, Zmacs, mode, redisplay, and who-line source files identify Massachusetts Institute of Technology copyrights. The Help capture includes a single functional dispatcher screen generated by zwei/doc.lisp. The restrictive historical LMI notice elsewhere in the LM-3 tree belongs to the separate tape subsystem, which is not displayed in these images. Its presence is a reason not to infer a repository-wide license, but it does not make these Zmacs pixels into Tape-system content. The earlier public System 46 release has a separate BSD-style license; its pinned release README says MIT licensed that software and credits Tom Knight's work with MIT's patent and technology-licensing office to secure release permission. That provenance is specific to the released System 46 tapes; this catalog does not extend their license to the maintained System 303 tree. The raster lettering visible in the frames does not distribute a font program; U.S. Copyright Office regulations also exclude “typeface as typeface” from copyright registration. Neither point substitutes for the fair-use analysis of the screen as a whole.

The PNGs are excluded from any present or future project-wide content or software license unless expressly stated otherwise. Their inclusion relies on the fair-use analysis above; it does not grant a sublicense in the underlying interface or software. Reusers must evaluate their own purpose, amount, jurisdiction, and risk. The surrounding catalog metadata and original museum prose are not subject to this asset exclusion. MIT, LM-3, and the named contributors do not endorse this museum.

Approved specification uses

  • The linear System 303 working-session tour, orientation, and application atlas may use the reviewed stills and ten animations cataloged below. These uses are limited to teaching the exact visible Listener, System Menu, Zmacs, Help, Inspector, Peek, Screen Editor, trace, Error Handler, Emergency Break, terminal, compiler, Flavor, and demonstration states beside substantive release-bounded explanation. Nine GIFs retain ordered action-boundary captures from one working session; the System-menu and QIX GIFs are continuous 10-frame-per-second captures. None is an alternation of unrelated endpoints.

For these animations specifically, the purpose is nonprofit instruction and criticism of verified gestures, activity selections, context changes, and QIX's raster algorithm; the displayed material is predominantly functional; the retained frames or bounded continuous interval are limited to the interaction being analyzed; and the inert loops cannot edit text, execute commands, inspect objects, recover a machine, or substitute for the software, band, source, font, or manual. Those four factors support the same limited fair-use conclusion as the source stills. scripts/build-tour-animations.sh verifies the reviewed GIF digests and frame counts without rebuilding them from unrelated tracked stills.

Capture catalog

Twenty-one files are exact 768 by 963 pixel grayscale framebuffers. spacewar-game.png is a 768 by 770 crop of its exact framebuffer that retains the complete game window and removes only an unrelated split-screen debugger below it. The raw names below identify ignored local sidecars and captures retained in the session; no ignored path is needed to render the museum pages.

The PNG digest identifies the exact tracked file bytes. For the twenty-one uncropped captures, the pixel digest in each original sidecar identifies normalized eight-bit RGB pixels and therefore remains stable across incidental PNG re-encoding. The Spacewar row records the separately computed decoded-pixel digest of the documented crop; its raw sidecar instead records raw PNG digest 550d87596d4cc2efd1be24ab58f8955dedf509d9b8515ee98e4492fc2d577f91 and raw pixel digest 356fb32cb25aae5b83aa324cecc4d508900a8accf0217aabd3f7e9eee82a96a5.

Tour animation identities

All ten files use a 768-by-963 logical canvas and infinite looping. Staged clips pause at action boundaries; continuous clips retain 10 fps. Lossless changed-region optimization may store later frames as smaller rectangles while preserving that logical canvas.

The complete ordered interaction was: answer the boot date/time question with N; evaluate an editor identity probe; evaluate (ED T); insert the small museum-demo Lisp definition visible in the later frames; press Help twice; invoke Meta-X; run Text Mode; invoke Meta-X again; and run Lisp Mode. The test definition was created for this observation and is not copied from an installed document or source file.

This is intermediate evidence from before the current structured CADR action-log layout. The sidecar correctly records capture-time hashes but does not contain the execution-time usim hash; the table joins that value from run.json. The retained ordered research transcript records this meaningful sequence: finish the date dialogue; evaluate (ED T); invoke Dired; abort the unconfigured remote-file login path and decline its modified-buffer save; invoke the named Edit Buffers command; capture the initial two-row editor; show local Help; mark and unmark rows; exercise the combined kill/print U case; abort without executing pending actions; and stop cleanly. Only the initial Edit Buffers state is published. The Dired login prompt, Help prose, mark sequence, and defect frames remain local.

The ordered documentary interaction was: answer the boot date/time question with N; open the System Menu and inspect its Emergency Break entry; evaluate (tv:kbd-use-cold-load-stream) from the listener; evaluate the synthetic form (+ 40 2) in the cold-load break loop; test the present harness's Resume delivery; and stop the private session cleanly. The Resume event was read as input rather than acting as the guest recovery gesture, so the museum does not claim that returning to the saved screen was runtime-verified.

The published crop retains the complete resulting Spacewar window with both ships and the central sun. Earlier exploratory debugger and introduction screens remain local. The session did not fire, turn, thrust, or enter hyperspace, so those behaviors remain source-established rather than runtime-observed.

The CADR harness generation predates the Genera-style action ledger, so the two capture sidecars do not contain keystroke records. The ordered input was reconstructed from the retained execution record and the timestamped intermediate frames. In portable guest notation it was:

  1. Submit n, n; attempt System-S; submit a third n to finish the cold-start date/time questions; attempt System-S again; then invoke System-Help and dismiss it with Space. Neither System-S attempt selected a terminal.
  2. Evaluate (make-system 'supdup), observe the isolated AMS-BRIDGE-1 FILE-host failure, and invoke Abort.
  3. Evaluate exactly (load (fs:make-pathname :host "LOCAL-BRIDGE" :raw-directory '("tree" "window") :raw-name "supdup" :raw-type "lisp")). The bridge-login reader received, in order, museum , a single space, museum , museum, tay, and tay , each activated with Return. These are literal throwaway local-bridge inputs, not reusable credentials.
  4. Answer the first source redefinition query with y and the second with p (Proceed), then wait for the pathname result.
  5. Evaluate (fboundp 'supdup:supdup-separate), then (supdup:supdup-separate). After the source-injected Supdup window appears, press Return and capture 0020-supdup-connect-prompt.png.
  6. Press Network-Q, then System-L; invoke Abort at the resulting Listener error. Evaluate (fboundp 'supdup:telnet-separate), then (supdup:telnet-separate), which reaches the unbound TYPEIN-PROCESS condition.
  7. Invoke Abort and evaluate exactly (let ((w (tv:make-window 'supdup:telnet :typein-process nil :typeout-process nil))) (send w :expose nil :clean) (send w :select) w). The final :select message is the selection input; after five seconds, capture 0025-telnet-disconnected-shell.png without further guest input.

This sequence is documentary provenance, not a recommended operating recipe. It deliberately preserves the failed load, repeated local-bridge login prompts, redefinition decisions, background Supdup error, and Telnet construction workaround that bound the two images' claims.

The ordered documentary interaction completed cold boot; displayed live System Help, which contained no S/T entries; attempted ordinary subsystem loading and recorded its isolated FILE-host failure; loaded the exact public window/supdup.lisp through the private LOCAL-BRIDGE using raw lowercase pathname components; accepted the reported redefinitions; verified the Supdup and Telnet entry function cells; selected the source-injected Supdup window; returned to the Listener; observed the ordinary Telnet creation's unbound process slot; and explicitly constructed a Telnet window with NIL process slots solely to record its static disconnected shell. The published images therefore do not imply that the source loaded cleanly, that the expected host prompt ran, or that a peer was contacted. The relevant Lisp source is public, but the capture-specific fair-use review still governs the selected screen pixels.

See ZWEI and Zmacs on the MIT CADR and LM-3 for the behavioral analysis and the CADR computer-use harness for the evidence schema and execution boundary.

Copyright basis Capture-specific U.S. fair use for criticism, scholarship, research, and technical verification. It contains only the functional Listener invocation/result needed to establish the source/runtime relationship, cannot substitute for the interactive system or source, and is excluded from repository-wide licensing.

This limited image passed the same four-factor review described above. Its purpose is evidentiary, the amount is one functional full-screen state needed to retain the Listener and who-line context, and it contains no Help/manual prose, artwork, private data, or third-party media. MIT and the named contributors do not endorse this museum.

The same core-environment captures support the Lisp Listener, the D01 Listener specification, System Menu and Select, the D02 program-selection specification, Inspector, and Peek.

The Screen Editor capture supports Screen Editor and Frame-Up and the D03 Screen Editor and Frame-Up specification.
