Tour of the MIT CADR / LM-3 environment

Begin with A working session on the MIT CADR. It is the primary tour: one continuous, screenshot-rich story in which you use the Listener, open the System menu, edit and ask for Help in Zmacs, inspect an object, watch processes in Peek, examine screen layout, trace and debug a function, visit terminal applications, use compiler tools, and finish with demonstrations and the emergency path.

The tour uses the preserved System 303-0 load band exercised through the isolated CADR Xvfb harness. System 46 and LM-3 source explain lineage and hidden behavior, but a step described as hands-on belongs to the inspected System 303 profile unless the text says otherwise.

Choose how to read

  1. Start the linear guided session if this is your first visit. Read it from top to bottom.
  2. Keep System 303 orientation open as a compact reference for screen regions, mouse buttons, System selection, Help, and Abort.
  3. Use the application atlas after the story when you need an exhaustive D01-D60 catalogue, preservation boundaries, or a direct route to a dossier.

The atlas is intentionally not the main tour. It accounts for infrastructure, unavailable products, destructive tools, and hardware-dependent programs that cannot be folded honestly into a first-person runnable story.

The story's route

Listener
  → System menu
  → Zmacs modes and Help
  → Inspector and Peek
  → Screen Editor
  → Trace and Error Handler
  → terminals and compiler tools
  → QIX, Doctor, and Spacewar
→ Emergency Break as a recovery boundary

Short teaching GIFs illustrate the transitions and key gestures. They use complete reviewed frames and slow pauses; captions distinguish them from real-time recordings.
